African American Collectibles on Display at Russell Library

Amy L. Zitka of The Herald Press reports on a collection of Afro-Americana collectibles which has sparked some controversy:

“African American Collectibles: Historical Treasures or Shameful Legacy?” is a forum that is free and open to the public on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Russell Library’s Hubbard Room.

The Afro-Americana, which includes figurines, dolls, knick-knacks and lawn decorations, are considered by some to be historical artifacts, while others believe the items are stereotyping a racial group and promoting biases against Blacks.

Appraisal Fair at Carnegie Art Center

Andy Porter of the Walla Walla Union-Bullentin reports on an appraisal fair hosted at the Carnegie Art Center this past Saturday:

Outside the Carnegie Art Center Saturday morning a crowd of people showed up with their collectibles and curiosities, and with them, hundreds of stories.

During the event, 10 certified appraisers spent six hours examining art, artifacts and curiosities ranging from a delicate Indian woven-grass basket to antique toys.

Cruisin’ Paradise

The “Cars of Yesteryear” show features cars of all sorts from different eras. He said many are vintage autos from the 1930s, ‘40 and ’50s, but a number of special vehicles will also be on display, including his antique 1934 GMC fire engine.

Cut Glass Show Set for July

AntiqueWeek writes that the 27th Annual Convention of the American Cut Glass Association will be held in Oak Brook, IL July 19 – 23:

The convention host, the ACGA Blackhawk Chapter, has prepared a special exhibit of Chicago-area cutting houses featuring the Heart pattern, which originated at the Pitkin & Brooks Glass Co. of Chicago. There will be seven speakers offering lectures on a range of topics including Heart of Chicago, Anderson glass, middle period glass, Toledo Museum of Glass, Cameo glass and cut glass advertisements.

The dA Center to Exhibit “Pomona in Focus”

Jennifer Cho Salaff of the U-San Bernardino County Sun reports on a new exhibition in the city of Pomona:

“Pomona in Focus” features classic and contemporary images of Pomona through works including photography, painting, sculpture, antiques and collectibles.

Collector Mike Schowalter will give viewers a look into Pomona’s past. The Pomona resident and avid Ebay visitor has included items like old matchbooks, decorative plates and even L.A. County Fair ribbons from the late 1950s.

Comic Fair at Library

Acme Comics and Collectibles will host a Comic Book and Graphic Novel Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.on Thursday at the South Sioux City Public Library, 2121 Dakota Ave.

The South Sioux City Public Library is hosting this event as part of its Summer Reading Program with the theme of “Dragons, Dreams and Daring Deeds.”
