StarWars.com announces that several sets of highly collectible autographed mats are currently up to auction at eBay.com:

The first two sets of autographed Star Wars Planet Mats auctioned as a fundraiser for MediCinema helped raise a tremendous amount of money for the charity as generous Star Wars collectors bid on a rare opportunity to own unique Star Wars collectibles autographed by an unparalleled roster of Star Wars stars.

The last set of Star Wars Planet Mats — the fifth and sixth in a series of six — is now being auctioned online for charity. Currently up are Hoth and Kamino.

It was one of many examples of unique Eastern Shore history, property and even vacations being listed, bought and sold on the Web site, which insiders say has revolutionized the way local artifacts land in the hands of collectors.

No longer do they only journey to the Shore to comb flea markets and antique shops in search of local lore. They also head to their keyboards.

The online listing is a niche market that experts say has created a demand for Shore artifacts and also has driven up their prices.

More People Catching eBay Bug

Ric Routledge of The Star Press writes that more and more people are getting the selling bug that is currently running strong on eBay:

eBay: It’s the modern-day gold rush with a yard-sale twist.

Success stories do abound, and some people have gotten rich, or at least done well, working eBay.

“eBay is one of the hottest stories discussed all across the business schools these days,” said Sushil Sharma, associate professor at Ball State University. “I use various eBay models in my discussions.”

The site handles about 4 million transactions daily and has 115 million customers worldwide, according to Sharma.

I wonder if they’ll ever accumulate the value of those old-time collections. I wish I’d saved a few stamps or those two-dollar bills my Dad used to give me, now that I see all the cash in coin collecting and philately.

But even if a collection isn’t driven by dreams of monetary gain, shouldn’t it at least provide some pleasure — whether it’s Pez dispensers, Manolo Blahniks or, if you’re like Jay Leno, antique motorcycles?
