Toothbrush Holders Now Collectibles

Saturday, February 11th, 2006

The Claremore Daily Progress writes this article about how the thing that holds your toothbrush has become a collectible:

The earliest toothbrush holders date from the first half of the 19th century, and were usually made of ceramic or iron stone material. In 1898 a pressed glass toothbrush holder was advertised by the U.S. Glass Company and was designed to be hung on the wall.

The heyday for figural toothbrush holders was 1920-1930, but did continue into the 1950s. With the thousands that were made, one would think they would be common, but consider three things first. They were made of fragile ceramic materials, they were usually kept in a bathroom, and primarily children used them. These three factors contributed to a tragic end for most, usually on a cold, hard floor.

Toys for Adults to Collect

Wednesday, February 1st, 2006

Susan Carpenter of the Los Angeles Times reports on “designer toys,” a new set of toys that men are steadily collecting:

Mark Troup readily admits he’s addicted, and not to the usual suspects. The objects that preoccupy his mind, shatter his impulse control and empty his wallet have names like Qees, Trexis and Dunnys. They are created by street artists such as Okkle, Honk and Da TeamBronx. They are known as “designer toys.”

Over the last couple of years, the market for the art form has quietly burgeoned as a growing number of independent design studios work with underground art stars to transform their two-dimensional canvas, comic-book and graffiti characters into limited-production, 3-D vinyl that doesn’t look like anything you’d see at a Toys “R” Us.
