Hot Wheels are Hot!

Tuesday, January 31st, 2006

Kristi O’Harran of The Daily Herald writes this report about men who are still collecting Hot Wheels:

Trucks and cars pull into the Lynnwood Target parking lot around 7:45 a.m. most weekday mornings. Just before the store opens at 8, grown men gather at the door where they share brief chitchat. When the key turns in the lock, they scoot, as if hurrying to the snack bar at a Seattle Seahawks halftime.

Jim Edwards joins other “Hot Wheels Guys” weekday mornings at Lynnwood’s Target and other department stores to see if any new collectible cars were stocked overnight.
Stand back. It’s not the day after Thanksgiving, it’s “Hot Wheels Guys” rushing to the toy aisles.

Luxury timepieces and jewellery continue to top the list of most-desirable collectibles among Thai investors. Even inflation has failed to shake the spending power of these connoisseurs.

According to Wannida Sae Tieo, the country manager for Sotheby’s auction house in Thailand, business in the local market last year went very well.

Demand for luxury collectibles, particularly premium watches and jewellery, has kept growing over the past few years.

New Auction Site Opens for Business

Saturday, January 28th, 2006

Alex L. Goldfayn of the Chicago Tribune writes this article about whaBam!, a new auction site that offers sellers some new options:

“It basically provides people with a low-cost alternative to the auction space,” Niazi said. “Most sites charge you to list an item, but we actually charge you nothing until your item sells, and then we only charge 1 percent of the sale price, which, as far as I know, is the lowest fee out there.”

While the site has only a tiny fraction of the listings of eBay (a recent search of the “books” categories revealed 10 listings on WhaBam compared with about 604,000 on eBay), Niazi said his auction site is maturing quickly.

eBay: It’s the modern-day gold rush with a yard-sale twist.

Success stories do abound, and some people have gotten rich, or at least done well, working eBay.

“eBay is one of the hottest stories discussed all across the business schools these days,” said Sushil Sharma, associate professor at Ball State University. “I use various eBay models in my discussions.”

The site handles about 4 million transactions daily and has 115 million customers worldwide, according to Sharma.

Along the way Lajoie – the French name pronounced Lah-Zhwa – would become the first superstar of the fledgling American League.

Collecting Space

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Elizabeth Day of The Telegraph writes this article about space memorabilia:

There is a healthy market in space memorabilia which capitalises on both the international appeal and the historical importance of items. The rarity of collectibles that have actually “flown” doesn’t hurt either – a would-be collector should keep an eye out for miscellaneous bits of kit that have been taken into space.
